Throughout the year there are several additional training opportunities that are run at the local, area, and regional levels. See below for descriptions of them.
General Cadet Knowledge Day (GCK Day)
GCK Day is a Locally Directed Activity that is usually run once per year. It is typically open to all cadets and covers several topics including how to wear and take care of your uniform, basic drill, ranks and structure of the cadet program, etc.
Senior Development Day
Senior Development Day is a Locally Directed Activity that is usually run once per year. It is typically open to senior cadets (Level 4+) and covers several topics including leadership, instructional techniques, activity planning, etc.
Gliding Familiarization Day
Gliding Familiarization Days are a Area Directed Activity where a limited number of cadets (typically 30-40) are bussed CFB Moose Jaw to participate in Gliding Familiarization activities, with the goal being to get every cadet a flight in a glider, weather permitting.
Field Training Exercises (FTX)
Field Training Exercises are typically either a Locally Directed Activity or an Area Directed Activity and usually involve spending a weekend camping. At 34 RCACS, we usually get to make use of Camp Saskadet for these training opportunities although other locations are possible. Training is dependent on the time of year and the weather but is usually focused on survival skills, camping, marksmanship, skiing / snowshoeing, canoeing, orienteering, map / compass work, and building / launching model rockets.
Orienteering
Orienteering Exercises are typically either a Locally Directed Activity or an Area Directed Activity and usually involve a day spent learning about how to use a map & compass and then participating in an "Orienteering Course", where cadets follow instructions that require them to use their map & compass skills to complete a pre-set course.
Canadian Armed Forces Familiarization
CAF Famil opportunities are typically an Area Directed Activity and usually involve spending time with a Reserve unit learning about what they do. As one of the goals of the cadet program is to stimulate an interest in the Canadian Armed Forces, these days provide an opportunity for cadets to learn more about potential careers in the CAF and participate in activities that they normally would not be able to.
Poppy Day
Every year the cadet program supports The Royal Canadian Legion's Poppy Campaign by having cadets posted at local business to distribute poppies for Remembrance Day. It is typically held on the last Saturday of October and is a volunteering / citizenship opportunity for cadets to participate in.
Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day is a very important event for all cadets to attend. Typically cadets will attend a ceremony either at the Brandt Center or the Cenotaph downtown in uniform where they will either provide assistance collecting the offertory or participate in the parade. Cadets may also contact the office to request permission to wear their uniforms for school or church ceremonies in their local communities.
